Sensor to replace is at tail end of automatic transmission. This is called the speed sensor. It may be plug in or have a long tail on the wiring. Check which one you have. easy replacement.

Overdrive is controlled by the shift solenoid, and vacuum modulator. the kick down you refer to is not overdrive but passing gear and should also be controlled by vacuum.

no, there are several transmissions that jeep used, they had transmissions for 4 cylendars, v-6, and v-8 applications. and like everything else, some had overdrive, some didnt. there might be one or two trannys that would interchange but your best bet is to go with the same one that you have.
