The trans may not be the problem. Depending on the car the mechanical linkages or electrnic controlers (computer) or sensors could be bad
A competent mechnic with the right scanner can watch all this work and see the issue.
Sounds like the tranny is gone, you'll need to replace it/have it replaced or rebuilt.
1998-2002 has some trans problems, do not get a used tranny. Must have tranny rebuilt. Replacing it will give you that same jerking problem later down the road. The tranny must be rebuilt.
Yes there is a speedometer sensor on top of the tranny that feeds the transmission computer and the speedo gauge. See the service manual for details on where it is, I believe on the LS it is acccessible without having to drop the tranny.
it has nothing to do with your motor. your problem is your syncros in your tranny are going out. when you cant engage the gear at all then the synco is totaly f'ed up. the fix..... replace or get your tranny rebuilt. im having the same problem im just swapping my dx tranny for a si tranny
Time for a new Tranny or a rebuilt. This is something that a Tranny shop needs to look at they have specialized equipment. First and reverse are usually the same gear except reverse direction. At least that has been my experience. It could just be shift solenoids are bad or even speed sensor. Have a good tranny shop check this out. Hope this helps
Tranny is shot Have it rebuilt or a new one i found rust in mine.
Check your transmission shift solenoids
i have a 2005 impala with these issues and five local tranny shops looked at my car and said its a common problem with (1) the valve body design, (2) weak clutch plates and (3) faulty solenoids. ... basically U need a rebuilt or remanufactured tranny ... DO NOT simply replace the tranny with another because it will have the same faulty parts inside that failed the first time ... U must have it REBUILT with AFTERMARKET improved parts because the standard stock parts will fail U again... hope this helps..... Sean G.
You can find them online for about $1400 or so rebuilt. Not too sure about new. Aamco charges about $3000 for a rebuilt plus about $1000 in labor. Our 99 Venture had the tranny rebuilt at about 30k miles and now at 65k miles it had to be completely replaced. This is a very common problem with these POS vehicles along with a long list of other problems.
Your band, 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shift solenoids are located on the tranny. You have to drain your tranny fluid, remove the pan, and they will be located in the valve body.
Just had my tranny rebuilt for the same problem that you are having. Good luck it's not cheap.
Look in the phone book under Transmission and call around. Usually if they take out a tranny that can be rebuilt, they will do so and sell it Phil
