My '88 Prelude Si 4WS had a short in the steering column. My "guys" pulled wires to a toggle switch that they free-placed in the coin tray. It gets hot . . . But, the running lights/brake lights work independently of the headlights!
check the fuse on the fuse box, the bulbs,or the connections.
When replacing bulbs, do not touch glass part with your fingers. Any oil from your hands will cause shorten lifespan.
check your bulbs. if a bulb blows they won't work.
first check to make sure #1 you have the proper bulbs #2 the bulb is in the socket correctly.either of these could cause the circuit to back feed

Corner signal glass is secured with 1 screw towards front of the car. Remove screw and drag the corner glass straight forward. Now you should be able to release the front signal glass. Replace bulbs, put back together.

3 things come to mind...Fuse, Bad Bulbs, Brake Light Switch. Whip out the volt meter and test it at the bulb socket for 12 volts when your buddy pushes the brake. Check the fuse, bad bulbs first.
