My first diagnosis would be a blown freeze plug, check that and you may find your problem.

Try replacing the motor to the a/c fan on the passenger side of the vehicle. That was the cause for my 98 deville to overheat. They sell the whole assembly for about $150.00 but they also sell the motor separate for $50.00. Its a lil more work but it'll save you $100.00
O2 sensor, and catalytic converter can be ruined. You can also cause internal damage to the engine, depending on what the problem is. Have it repaired.
Should be spring side down most engines. The bi metal parts that cause it to open are generally on that side and have to be exposed to the coolant so it operates at correct temp.
Because your emergency break is stuck. You will half to bang it with a hammer to free it up.
