Now seriously, although full integration between both countries is almost impossible at the time being due to economic, demographic and cultural differences, both countries are close business and trade partners.
If both countries become part of an "American Union", the mechanism of such integration would be like that found in the European Union: each country is independent, but responds to an international framework, namely the European Central Bank, Court of Justice of the European Union, etc.
Culturally, this is already happening: with a stagnating growth, Americans of European ancestry will become a minority against Americans of Mexican and Asian ancestry within the next few decades. This does not mean that you have to learn Spanish/Cantonese, become Catholic and begin wearing choloclothes; it just means that a country which was once black and white, will finally become the rainbow (or melting pot) it has been preaching for the last couple of centuries.
