Smoking is strongly discouraged when you are pregnant. If you aren't concerned about your own health, then you should be concerned about the health of your baby and try very hard to quit while you are pregnant. Smoking affects your baby's health from the moment he is conceived. If you smoke during your pregnancy, you could suffer a miscarriage, still birth and increase the chance that your baby is born prematurely (there are numerous health concerns with premature babies). Exposing the baby to carbon monoxide, nicotine and other poisonous substances decrease the amount of oxygen that the baby receives and increases his heart rate. You increase the risk that the baby will have respiratory problems. The more cigarettes you smoke, the greater the risk that your baby will have some problem. Once the baby is born, you should also try not to smoke around the baby - go outside if you have to light up. Exposing the baby to secondhand smoke could lead to Asthma, lung cancer, Allergies and other health problems.
Having a baby is a big responsibility. The mother should do everything possible to protect her unborn child. Talk to your doctor about ways you can quit smoking. Try your best to quit for the remainder of your pregnancy - your baby will thank you one day. And, you also may be able to quit for good. Best of luck!
