What would make the 98 explorer EB not start it turns over but no start and gas mileage has gone down to 9 mpg from 19 in 3 wks?

A good/easy way to start is to check your fuel pressure. this will tell you if your fuel pump is sufficient enough to pump fuel, or if your fuel filter is clogged. The best thing to do is to go to the nearest shop and have them check your fuel pressure. But sounds like to me since your gas mileage has dropped, and it wont start, that its either the pump, or filter. Filter runs about 20 bucks, and pump close to 150. so hopefully its just the filter. hope this helped.
