James Cook (not yet a captain) first visited New Zealand in October of 1769, staying until February 1770, when he sailed west to the eastern coast of Australia.

The details of his arrival are: On 7 October 1769, 12-year-old cabin boy named Nicholas Young first sighted New Zealand, and two days later the 'Endeavour' anchored in Poverty Bay, which Cook originally named as Endeavour Bay. Cook and two botanists, Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, went ashore at the future site of Gisborne on 9 October 1769.

Incidentally, James Cook was not the first to discover New Zealand, but he was the first to circumnavigate the islands. (Abel Tasman discovered New Zealand in 1642.)

* He returned to New Zealand between February and May, 1773.

* He returned once more in November 1773.

* He was back in New Zealand again during October-November of 1774.

* He was in New Zealand once more during late December 1776 and the first months of 1777.

Cook visited New Zealand on 3 occasions. The first time was after he had travelled to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus. After obeserving the transit of Venus his orders were to find the contrinent Terra Australis which was thought to be in the Southern Pacific. While looking for this contenent he came across New Zealand.

Cook visited NZ two other times while looking exploring the South Pacific.

There are two parts to this question: when Cook left England, and when he reached New Zealand. Captain Cook departed England on 25 August 1768 in order to observe the transit of Venus (when the planet Venus passes directly between the Earth and the Sun). Cook reached Tahiti in April, in plenty of time for his crew and scientists to set up their instrumentation necessary to observe and report on the transit, which occurred on 3 June 1769. After observing the transit of Venus, Cook went on to search for Terra Australis Incognita, the great continent which some believed to extend round the pole. It was shortly after observing the transit of Venus that Cook came across New Zealand, which had already been discovered by Abel Tasman in 1642. He landed there on 6 October 1769. Cook claimed New Zealand for England and spent some months there, charting the coastline. Later, he set sail east for New Holland, (later having its eastern half proclaimed as New South Wales), sailing into botany Bay on 29 April 1770.
