What choice did they have? They had laws against doing the simplest things such as sitting at a counter, they were constantly reminded they were "inferior" by having to use crappy drinking fountains or restrooms away from the whites, and worst of all they were completely outnumbered by whites who not only thought white people were superior, but whites who were willing to lynch any black person (every a 14 year old) for so much as looking directly at a white woman (or whistling as the whites claimed, but I doubt that & it wouldn't make the lynching less evil anyway).
