The first slave ship, ironically called "The Good Jesus" embarked on the first slave voyage to the Americas in 1652. The captain was John Hawkins, a man who claimed to be very devout and religious. Elizabeth I provided him with a 700 ton ship so he could sail to Africa, kidnap people and take them to America where they would be sold as slaves.
