The 1996 Ford Explorer is definitely OBD II / EEC V , my late 1995 Ford Explorer has
both the EEC TEST connection in the engine compartment for OBD I / EEC IV but it also
has the Data Link Connector ( DLC ) under the steering wheel for the newer system
which has confused some of the newer technicians ( and myself )
There is no 1988 Ford Explorer. The vehicle went into production in 1990 for the 1991 model year, replacing the two door Bronco II;. As for the Bronco II, there isn't an OBD port.
The OBD-II connector on the 2006 Ford Explorer is located above and in front of the parking brake release, behind the dash trim.
