John Adams was elected second US President in 1796, but didn't take office until March 4, 1797. He served a single four-year term, from March 1797-March 1801, when he was succeeded by Thomas Jefferson.

During the few months between the time the electoral votes are counted (and certified) and inauguration day, the person who won the election is referred to as the President-elect. He (or she) has no authority until taking the oath of office at the appointed day and time.

The Twentieth Amendment, ratified in 1933, changed Inauguration Day from March 4 to January 20.
