Texas was lost during the Texas Revolution (1835-1836). Territory of Texas at the time included present-day Texas, as well as parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and Wyoming.
During the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) Mexico lost several territories, including present-day California, Nevada, Utah and the rest of Colorado as well as most of northern New Mexico and Arizona. Also at the end of the war Mexico was forced to cease any attempt on reclaiming Texas. This is also known as the Mexican Cession (1848).
Texas had already seceded from Mexico during the Texas Revolution (1835-1836), but it became part of the US when it was admitted to the Union in 1845.
Until 1835, Texas was still part of Mexico. Not a single acre of Texas was purchased from Mexico as an international transaction (it was settled by American Empresarios, though).
The US did take a part of Mexico which is now Texas
The US annexed Texas from Mexico in 1844 after James K Polk won the presidential election.

annexed and according to an 1836 treaty, its borders stretched to the Rio grande but was disputed by Mexico and then after a 2 year war the US paid money to Mexico for it. (18 million and change).
Mostly they disagreed with the US having Texas.
To summarize, California, Nevada, Utah, Texas and parts of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Wyoming were part of Mexico and now belong to the US.
By force, no. The US has three times the population of Mexico, and a military budget 72 times larger than the Mexican counterpart. These numbers alone prevent any such attempt on reclaiming Texas.
Mexico is the country located directly south of the United States. It shares a border that spans over 1,900 miles.
