The Romans did not invent Latin. Languages are not invented. They develop. Moreover, the Romans were not the only Latins. The Latins lived in Latium (land of the Latins) which covered an area between the river Tiber and the northern side of the Lepini mountains and had some thirty towns, not just Rome.
