In 1912, Arizona and New Mexico became the 47th and 48th States. So the flag had 48 stars until 1959 when Alaska and Hawaii were added bringing us to the current number (2015) of states to 50.

The State of Hawaii was admitted to the Union in 1960. Effective July 4 of this year, there will have been 50 states for 50 years.
