Yes, but they didn't have the kind of fire power like the mechanized war machines like airplanes and tanks did. The last well-known cavalry that was sent out during WWII was when the Polish charged the German tanks in the first year the Second World War started. The whole cavalry was pretty much wiped out. Horses then were only used in very small numbers to transport materials and units to areas where machines couldn't or wouldn't go. This in itself was rare, as many roads and bridges were built for trucks, tanks jeeps to go on to transport goods from one front to another.

In Britain the most significant figures were Sir Eustace Tennyson d'Eyncourt, Major Ernest Swinton, and Willliam Tritton. It was Swinton and Tritton who jointly designed and built the prototype that became the Tank Mark I. In France, the likeliest candidate is Colonel J.B.E. Estienne, who had plans drawn up and persuaded the military to build them. The French and British projects were neck-and-neck, beginning in 1915, although it was the British who first used Tanks on the battlefield.

Britain produced heavy and medium tanks, while France concentrated more on small, light vehicles. Production figures for WWI (approximate): Great Britain 2,600; France 4,000; Germany 20. Russia and Italy also carried out limited experiments. Russia's were abandoned, and Italy produced two prototypes before the War ended. Plans for the USA to build tanks for herself and the Allies were not successful, and none was completed in time to see action.
