1799-1815 is The Napoleonic era. In 1795 the short and bloody 'Reign of Terror' that followed 'The French Revolution' came to an end a counter-action of the original revolution, quickly seized power and set up The Directory. From this General Bonaparte was made First Consul, after a lot of manouvering on his part and that of the brilliant politician and diplomat Charles de Talleyrand; a coup d'etat to all intents and purposes, the directory was over and the consulate had begun, later in 1804 Napoleon was declared 'Emperor of The French'. France now found herself alone, surrounded by enemies of her new regime; she needed a great soldier and an even greater strategist, she got both in Napoleon. It was not enough merely to repel her borders however, for Napoleon sought to conquer and annex countries, his determination, self-belief, strategy and courage were outstanding. The British Royal Navy was too powerful and talented for him at sea though. Nevertheless Continental Europe was at his disposal and Bonaparte was very shrewd at placing the crowns of his newly won lands on the heads of his own family and close friends. Eventually he marched his Grand Armee into Russia in 1812. There his soldiers were simply swallowed up by the massiveness of that country. The Russians simply retreated and used scorched earth tactics, burning everything they left behind so Napoleon couldn't use anything. Eventually Napoleon simply ran out of supplies, having conquered mere dirt, and had to return through a freezing winter with no supplies. His army suffered massive losses. Napoleon was deposed and exiled to Elba, an island in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1815 Napoleon escaped, the soldiers sent to ensure his recapture joined forces with him instead and Europe was at war once again. Napoleon engaged Wellington just outside Waterloo in Belgium, the Prussians under Bluecher were to come to Wellington's aid just in time, very late in the early evening, after a noon start, much later and Napoleon would have finished Wellington and got what he wanted, to fight the two armies one at a time and beat them both. Wellington described it as "The closest run thing you ever saw." The battle, fought on 18th June 1815, marked the end of the Napoleonic era, The Emperor was exiled again, this time to Saint Helena in the South Atlantic where he died at Longwood in 1821.

What French dictator was known for how short he was?

Napoleon Bonaparte . The French do not regard Napoleon as a dictator. He was more properly called Premier or Emperor. He is a great hero in France. Napoleon, it might be noted, was not even French. He was born (1769) in Corsica, shortly before it was incorporated into France (30 Nov 1789). His native language and ancestry were Italian and French historians have noted that he never lost his pronounced Italian accent. Napoleon's short stature was mocked in cartoons in England, France's longtime enemy. Napoleon was an ally of America, but over the years the American view of Napoleon has become similar to the British viewpoint.
