Geo. Washington was inaugurated in NYC in 1789. (I have seen websites claiming that Washington took his oath in Phil.) Some time after that the capital was moved to Philadelphia (1790?) Washington DC became the capital in 1800.

Plus New york was known as New Amsterdam, and it was the capital during the American Revolution, at which point we were not a unified country. Philadelphia was our capital when we announced our freedom from Britain becoming a country. Anybody who says New york was the first capital is absolutely wrong!
