Whats wrong with a 98 dodge neon 100100 miles when you start the engine it will smoke and sometimes it wont and will not when it idles but it does when you give it gas and when you hold the gas it wont?

Neons are natorious for head gasket problems , leaking oil and water internally and externally ! have you had the head gasket replaced ? I hate to say it but it was a recall but only up to 97 ! I tried to get them to honor it for my daughters 98 but they would not !!!!! it leeked oil profusly down the back side of the head / block mating area !! you should be able to check with a compression gauge for the proper compression !! Also , (not being a known problem in neon) , the valve guide seals could be bad causing the oil to leek through to the cylinders ! you could remove the valve cover and check inside the valve springs to see if the umbrella seals are cracked/brittle/and or have risin up from the valve guide!
