When 1998 Mitsubishi montero is left idling there is no heat output but when in drive and moving heat flows. Is this normal for this vehicle?

No, I would suspect a stuck open thermostat, a failing (worn) water pump or clogged heater core. Also chedk for a sticking heater control valve in the coolant circuit if fitted. It could also be a internally swelled heater hose from the block to the heater core blocking proper coolant flow..

I have MitsubishI Montero Limited 2001 with 74,000 miles on it. During the winter I had few times situation where gear shifter felt like it was "sticking" moving in a "thick oil", I attributed that to a cold weather. Just yesterday I came back from vacation (took different car) got into Montero and had problem shifting, it feld like shifter is moving in a thick mud. After few tries, I was able to drive in reverse, however shifting into "drive" is difficult and requires few tries before it catches. It feel almost like there is a glue in the gear box. Any idea what to look for?

As long as the engine temperature doesn't move into the extremely hot range, then this is just normal operation for the engine's cooling system. When an engine is running at idle speed with the vehicle stopped, there is no air flow coming through the grill to assist in cooling the radiator. Only the engine's fan system is doing any of the cooling at idle speed. For this reason, the engine temperature will increase somewhat at idle in a non-moving vehicle. Once you start moving, even though the engine RPMs increase causing more heat, the air flow forced through the vehicle's front grill and through the radiator cooling fins compensates for the added heat and decreases the engine temperature. Note however, if the temperature is moving into the extreme hot area on the dash gage when the vehicle is idling and not moving, there may be issues with the engine's cooling system.
