If you haven't turned the engine over since pulling the distributor just put it back in pointing at #5. If you have turned the engine over since removing it simply rotate it until it is at #1 TDC. The easiest way to verify this is to line up the timing marks on the harmonic balancer and the pointer. Unfortunately this doesn't tell you if you are the exhaust or compression stroke. Worst case is you would then be 180 degrees out and you'd have to re-install the distributor exactly opposite of where it is pointing. If you have an assistant remove the #1 plug. Have them put their thumb over the hole. Bump the engine over until the compression blows their thumb from the cylinder. That would be #1 compression stroke. Now install the distributor and wires following the firing order.
It can not be done with any certainty with out getting number one cylinder on top dead center and on the compression stroke.
+ goes to starter solenoid, - goes to distributor side post. center plug wire goes to center plug on distributor.
be it a 4,6,or8 cylinder....be sure you have the crank on TDC, top dead center, install the distributor so that the rotor is pointing to #1 cylinder on the cap
No. The coil is the piece at the other end of the wire that comes out of the center of the distributor cap.
Timing is the position of the distributor rotor in relation to the #1 spark plug wire lug on the distributor cap - when the #1 cylinder is at top dead center.
the coil which is bolted to the thermostat housing
With the distributor out turn the engine over by hand until you get the #1 cylinder to top dead center (if you pull the plug and use something to stick in the plug hole and you'll be able to feel the top of the piston when it it all the way up. Then put the distributor in, probably several times turning the bottom gear until when you put it in the rotor is pointing toward the #1 cylinder. This should get you close enought to fire and then you'll need to adjust the timing.
You want the TDC on the compression stroke of the #1 cylinder, then drop in the distributor with the rotor pointing to #1 on the distributor cap.
The distributor cap order for a Chevy 283 varies depending on the year of the motor. A 1975 to 1991 has the number one cylinder at the top just to the left of center. The 1967 to 1974 distributor has the number one cylinder at the top just to the right of center. The firing order is 1, 8, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 2.
Bring the #1 cylinder up to top dead center, remove the distributor cap, mark where the rotor is pointing on the distributor body, loosen or remove the distributor hold down and pull the distributor straight up.
get #1 cylinder on top dead center and then put the distributor rotor bug a hair before the #1 plug wire on the distributor and drop in down into the engine and all should be fine.
There should be a mark on the distributor or it's switch plate that indicates where the rotor should point for cylinder 1. If you look at the distributor from the front of the vehicle, the closest center position should be for cylinder 2. Clockwise 1/8 th turn from that should be cylinder 1 position, but double check against the indicator mark that should be present.
