What Mitt Romney means is that historically, the purpose of a marriage union was to produce children. While men can remain fertile into their 70s or 80s, women typically reach menopause in their 50s. The fact that the wife my be infertile, does not negate that traditional purpose of marriage. In the context of the change in standards in 21st Century Western culture, he also means that since marriage between two people of the same sex can never produce children, there is no fundamental purpose for such a marriage. More to the point, since homosexual relationships have been forbidden by every major monotheistic religion for more than 2,000 years, he does not support changing the definition of marriage to include marriage between two people of the same sex, just because Western culture has been embracing the open expression of homosexual relationships for a few decades. Romney forgot one thing ... companionship. It doesn't matter if you are 50 - 90, if you would like to remarry and commit under the eyes of of God then so be it. People simply need other people. Of course the above poster is correct in the theory of Romney that marriage was to produce children.

What is the definition of the word marriage?

The Meaning of MarriageMarriage is an institution that was originally established for the raising of children. Of course, like everything else in life, institutions change dependent of the flavor of the times. For example, marriage within the extended family, e.g. grandparents and uncle and aunts, where many generations lived together, has disappeared. Today's most marriages evolve around the nuclear family, consisting of husband, wife and children. But outside the heterosexual marriage, we now allow same-sex marriage, along with single family parenting. With each change in the concept of marriage, the basic ingredients for parenting has deterioratied, e.g. look at the statistic of Juvenile Court cases. In addition, with our expectations raised, we are seldom satisfied about what life presents to us. We seem to forget what marriage is all about. Yes, marriage is difficult! But, tell me about a better institution for feeling secure in a relatiionship or for the raising of children?
