An open system is an operating system that is entirely free to use, copy or pass on to others. Linux Mint and Ubuntu are just two examples of many that are freely available for downloading from the internet.
A proprietary system is an operating system that has to be paid for, has to be registered, and is never yours to own, copy or pass onto others. Microsoft's Windows is an example of proprietary systems software.

What is the differnce between proprietary operating systems and nonproprietary operating systems?

"Proprietary" means that the source is closed or only available to a select few. Microsoft Windows is an excellent example of a proprietary operating system. "Non-proprietary" is the opposite of the above. These are more commonly referred to as "free" operating systems, since you have access to the underlying code, and can modify it. What is proprietary operating system?

propietary operating systems is one where an company designs, develops and markets it as their own system. Windows is one, OS X is another. You must buy it from them or one of their resellers. Linux is an open source OS which you can do what you want with it after you download it for free from the internet. This is what open source means. Do not confuse proprietary operating systems with proprietary applications or software. These are programs developed by a specific company for a specific purpose when off the shelf software will not meet their needs.

What are examples of non-proprietary operating systems?

"Non-proprietary" is the opposite of the above. These are more commonly referred to as "free" operating systems, since you have access to the underlying code, and can modify it.
