When are the water fountains at Versailles Palace on display?
Grandes eaux Nocturnes: finished for this year; most Saturdays in July and August, 2130 to 2330.
Water was supplied from a complex of water wheels, known as the machine at Marly. This was the biggest water-wheel installation ever constructed and was completed in 1682. In fact it never was entirely satisfactory; it is said that the fountains of Versailles were operated only when in the eyesight of the king because of the limited water supply.
Versailles is a massive garden with fountains. It began on swampy land as a hunting palace but was filled in and laid out in a formal French style between 1661-1700. The geometric aligned terraces, flowerbeds( which were changed 5 times a day) , tree lined paths, ponds and fountains. There are 400 odd statues of marble, bronze, and lead were made by the most talented artists. The Grand Canal is oriented to reflect the sunset…
Yes, at least the poorer ones got their water from fountains which were all over the city of Rome. The aqueducts brought the water either to storage tanks, from where it was piped into the fountains, or in some cases directly to the fountain. The wealthy could have their water piped directly to their homes.
Public water fountains can be extremely dangerous in the number and kinds of bacteria that are found there. Some studies have found that water fountains harbor more germs than the water in a toilet bowl. People either throw trash in the fountain, spit in it, or put their mouths directly on the spigot.
