When bank holding mortgage calls for update information like work phone etc. do you have to answer?

If it is truly your bank calling to confirm updated information, then yes you need to give that information to them.
However, most banks don't need to call you for this information - they have it when you are approved for the mortgage and it is your responsibility to update the information if it changes. I would be very suspicious if your bank calls you and starts asking for a lot of personal information. The best way to handle this is to say you don't have the information on you at this moment, but if the caller could give you the phone number to call back at you will return the call. If possible, also get the name of the person calling - a real representative will start the phone call by identifying themselves while a scammer will usually try to avoid giving his/her name out.
Once you have the contact information, find your last mortgage statement and call the customer service number on that. Ask the representative there if they need any information updated on your account. Notify them of the call you received from the previous person and the contact information they gave you. The bank will investigate and bring charges against individuals posing as bank representatives, as this is probably fraud.
