After they are completely weaned. I start at around 3 weeks giving mushy puppy food mixed with Esbilac or canned milk, diluted one part water to one part canned milk. Do not use regular cow's milk as will cause diarrhea. Make sure the dry puppy food is soaked until it is very soft and make it very liquidity so they can lap it up at first. It is important for them to be around their Mother for at least 6 weeks. I usually have them off the mom as far as nursing by the age of 5 weeks but still let them interact together.

10- 12 weeks. The pups will be weaned before then but how silly to believe the mothers only purpose is nursing. Mom will teach them social skills with people and animals as well as confidence. Taking any creature away from the one nature intended to raise it too early tends to cause insecurity which can lead to temperament and behavior problems down the road. It is not realistic to think you can replace Mom without causing the pup the separation stress that makes them feel vulnerable and anxious. How they react to this vulnerability can vary from over attachment to defensive even if these behaviors take a while to manifest as the puppy grows. If you can't keep them this long it is irresponsible to breed.

How long do people need to keep newborn dockson puppies?

If the puppies are with the mother then you should keep them with her until 8 weeks of age. The mother will instinctively wean the puppies on her own, but you may need to help her by removing her from the puppies. The puppies can technically be taken away after 6 weeks, but the longer the puppies are with the mother the better because they will learn from their mother.

At what age do you take the puppies away from the mom?

Can you separate a dog from her puppies a day or two after birth so she can get a break?

its not recomended. the mother will become worried and begin looking for her puppies everywhere. it wont be a break for her. and the puppies will be whinning constantly for milk. the puppies might also die without food. the mother and pups would probably be okay with an hour or two away from each other

Should Newborn puppies be around father?

Excercise caution depending on the breed of the father. Some animals will kill their young if they detect any signs of weakness from birth. However, if you keep the dog away from the puppies, it may become agitated to the point of attacking you or the mother, or anything nearby. In short; let the father with the puppies and the mother, yet be very vigilant and if the father begins showing signs of aggression, separate them immediately.
