You shouldn't have to rock the engine forward, I have an '01 Malibu with the same engine, and the way that I did it, was to come from the passenger side of the car, and just get an extension with a wrench that bends at the neck and they should come right out. It was a little difficult for me to do this at first but after I was shown how to do it, it wasnt that hard. I would recomend getting a hayne's manual for the car, that shows you how to do it in the pictures.

also if you have a hard time reaching the plugs, then take the coil plate off to give more room, only 3 bolts to gain access.

What exactly are you trying to do? Timing is controlled by the computer. Timing marks are on the timing chain gears. I own a 1998 Malibu JJ
