The Enterprise of The Indies
Christopher Columbus believed that the lands he reached were the West Indies, in Southern Asia, although it was actually the Carribean Islands, south of North America.
Although the land that Christopher Columbus discovered and claimed for Spain was actually part of the "New World", he believed that these new lands were part of southern and eastern Asia. Even until his death, Columbus insisted these new lands were part of Asia, despite evidence from other European explorations which suggested these lands were actually part of the "New World".
The West Indies are significant in history because that's where Christopher Columbus landed first in search of the new world. Leading to the perpetuation of the action of the removal of natives from their land. The West Indies were avidly involved in the slave trade with Portugal and America.
