Christopher Columbus believed that the lands he reached were the West Indies, in Southern Asia, although it was actually the Carribean Islands, south of North America.
When he reached the Caribbean (Mid-America) he thought he was in India. Hence the Caribbean is often referred to as the West Indies.
He was seeking a quicker passage to India, so thought he had landed there at first. This was in 1492 though.
