US President Abraham Lincoln led the Union, sometimes referred to as the North, in the war to bring the rebellion of the Southern US States, the Confederacy, to an end. Later the "rebellion" grew too large, and became a war. The US Civil War was one term for this 1861-1865 war, the other term is the War between the States.
