Union General Joseph Gilbert Totten graduated from West Point in 1805. He was the 10th cadet to graduate from West Point. He served under the much younger General George B. McClellan in the 1862 Peninsula campaign. He died in 1864, having spent his entire life in the US Army.
Union General Edward Richard Sprigg Canby graduated from West Point in 1839. Among the 31 graduating cadets that year, Canby ranked 31st. Canby saw action in the Mexican War and also in the West in the US Civil War. To his credit was a plan to capture Mobile, Alabama in 1865.
Union General Henry Prince graduated from West Point in 1835. Among the 56 graduating cadets that year, Prince was ranked 30th. Prince is most famous for his part in the Battle of Gettysburg. There his commanding officer, General Meade criticized Prince for failing to properly engage the retreating Army of Northern Virginia.
Confederate General Joseph Wheeler graduated from West Point in 1859. He was ranked 19th in his graduating class of 22. Wheeler was a cavalry officer. He was wounded three times in the war and had 16 horses shot out from under him. He is best known for his operations at the battles of Chickamauga and Atlanta. Wheeler also served in Cuba under Teddy Roosevelt.
Union General George Douglas Ramsay graduated from West Point in 1820. He was ranked 26th among the 30 graduating cadets in that year. Ramsay served in major Eastern Theater battles including the Second Battle of Bull Run and Chancellorsville.
Union General Francis Laurens Vinton graduated from West Point in 1856. Among the 49 cadets in his graduating year, Vinton was ranked tenth. Vinton saw service in the Peninsula campaign, including the Battle of Seven's Pines. Not long after that he served in a series of battles that included Antietam, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
Union General Hugh Judd Kilpatrick graduated from West Point in 1861. Among his class of 45 graduating cadets, Kilpatrick was ranked 17th. Kilpatrick saw most of his battlefield action in the Eastern Theater of the US Civil War. He served in the battles of Second Bull Run, Gettysburg and the Overland campaign.
