James I of England was also James VI of Scotland but it was Anne Stuart who united the two governments officialy, as they were contrasting.

Another Answer: In 1603 Queen Elizabeth I of England died without issue and as her nearest relative King James VI of Scotland also became King James I of England although each country still retained their own separate parliaments. The prospect of any further union betwen the two nations other than this proved extremely unpopular and was successfully resisted, despite it being the King's preference.

By 1707 the United Kingdom had a constitutional monarch in the form of Queen Anne; as the granddaughter of James I & VI, the last of the Stuart Dynasty, and the political and economic circumstances had changed. Agreement was reached between the Scottish and the English parliaments for them to combine and this was effected under the terms of the Act of Union which Anne signed that year. Union was not total, however. Scotland still retained her own religious, educational, and legal systems intact and distinct from those of England; a situation that exists to this day.

Answer

King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England in 1603 when he inherited the throne from Queen Elizabeth I. This is often referred to as the "personal union" of the crowns, because the same person held the two crowns at the same time.

in 1697 - 1700, the Scots attempted to create a colony in modern Panama, called Darien. the scheme gathered huge public support and vast funding. The colony, however was a disaster, most of the colonists killed, and the invested money lost. The nation was bankrupted by the failure, with crippling debt to London.

As a result, On 1st May 1707, the Acts of Union legally formalised the Union, and the the country became "The United Kingdom of Great Britain", which included Scotland and Wales. The parliament was to be in London and there would a single monarch, initially Queen Anne.

The debts of the Darien scheme were compensated, as part of the conditions of Union.

This is a difficult question to answer as it was not a Catholic King that united Scotland and England.

The King who ascended to the thrones of both Scotland and England was King James VI of Scotland/I of England. This became known as 'The Union of the Crowns' but did not unite the kingdoms into a 'United Kingdom' yet. James was raised in the Protestant Church of Scotland and was not a Catholic.

The "Gunpowder Plot" of 1605 was a Catholic conspiracy aimed at blowing up the House of Parliament with King James I inside it.

James was King of Scotland since 24th July 1567 and succeeded Queen Elizabeth I to the throne of England when she died on 24th March 1603.

It is worth noting that 'The United Kingdom' did not come into being until the Acts of Union in 1707; a long time after both thrones started to become occupied by one person.

Part of the Acts of Union was to 'unite' the Kingdoms of England and Scotland which until 1707 remained separate kingdoms albeit for about one hundred years having both 'thrones' occupied by one person.

Queen Anne who incidentally was also a protestant, was the last Monarch of the Kingdom of Scotland, the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Ireland as well. She became Queen of Great Britain in 1707.

Although the United Kingdom officially came into being in 1707 the first Monarch to be Styled 'By the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, etc...' was King George III who ascended to the throne in 1801.
