Grandma Moses started to paint on a farm in Eagle Bridge, New York when she was decorating her parlor and ran out of wallpaper. She then put up a white sheet of paper and finished it with a scene which became known as the Fireboard.

It's reported that she started painting because she started developing arthritis when she turned 76 years old, being an avid embroiderer, it became more and more difficult to her to manage the thread and needle, so one of her friends suggested her to start painting instead.
