Henry VIII, a devout Catholic, wanted to have his marriage to his brother's widow, Catherine of Aragon, annulled. The argument was that the marriage was in breach of Canon Law; this was made more complicated by the fact that Henry himself had argued from the basis of Canon Law that it was his duty to marry Prince Arthur's wife after his death.

Catherine was a desirable wife for political purposes because of her relationship to the Emperor Charles V (Carlos I of Spain) the head of the House of Habsburg.

The general practice of the papacy at this time was to grant royal requests for anulments especialy if they were supported by good (or convincing) evidence. However Charles V sacked Rome in 1527 and held Pope Clement prisoner and did not wish for his aunt's marriage to be anulled.

Henry desparate for a male heir and unable to have his marriage legally annulled by the Pope caused it to be annulled by act of parliament thereby removing the English Church from the authority of Rome.

Henry however, at least in his own mind, never stopped being a Catholic. His son Edward was under the influence of fanatical Protestants and he was succeeded by the equally fanatical Mary.

Elizabeth I attempted a via media but increased opposition in Europe (including the encouragement bring about her death) meant that the Roman Catholic Church was illegal in England until about 1850 although the Anglican Church continued to claim Catholic rather than Protestant roots.

Henry at no time broke from Rome! When Henry pointed out that according to the Canons of Nicea the Pope had no right to interfere in another bishop's see [which is perfectly true, even today] the pope broke off communion with Henry. About forty years later the then pope Pius Vth, I think, embarked on a political adventure to remove Henry's daughter Elizabth from the English throne. He delivered a most offensive papal bull against her and in an effort to destabilise the country and possibly cause a civil war, he called on his friends ,[about 2 %] to set up the new Roman Catholic Church!
