As a general rule, Honduras has never sent immigrants to the U.S. en masse, the overwhelming majority of illegal immigrants from Central America who cross over the U.S. border tend to be from El Salvador. In fact, some communities of Salvadorans in Los Angeles have gotten so large, their gangs have begun to rival Mexican ones. The massive influx of Salvadorans of course began in the 1980's, because of that whole mess with how the Pentagon funded Salvadoran death squads. Being left homeless, many went to the U.S., and, being faced with racism here, many turned to crime. Honduras in fact has never sent significant numbers of immigrants, legal or illegal to the U.S., when it does send them, the overpowering majority tend to end up in Miami, New Orleans, and Texas in that general order, and most Hondurans, because of the "gringos," Mexicans and Salvadorans there, tend to avoid Los Angeles. Be it the weather, be it the people, the water who knows, for whatever reason, Los Angeles and Hondurans, do not get along.

The time when Honduras began sending immigrants to the U.S. en masse, was the early 1990's, and this number got even bigger with the advent of huricane mitch. As with Mexico, a large bulk of the incoming money Hondurans get, comes from people working here, who send all extra money they earn back home. Also, make no mistake, many illegal Honduran immigrants may in fact be well educated; there are Hondurans with doctorate degrees, and from European Universities no less, who come here illegally. Thanks to their education, many can get into contact with forgers that can make convincing citizenship papers. Some will meet with success, others won't, and some, will end up in Spain, where I hear the population of young people is so lazy, just having a Bachelor's degree will guarantee you a job there. In fact, the tight job market in other parts of Europe, makes it so that Spain's main immigrant problem, is cause more by Europe than by Latin America.

In Great Britain, Germany, France, and even Italy, actually, the Bachelor's degree is no longer recognized; realizing that all undergraduate work is preparation for graduate school, many Western European countries do not even bother with people who only hold a Bachelor's, and most European Universities require their students to go all the way, once you enter college, you HAVE to get a Masters, you are pretty much not given a choice. Because of the near impossible upward mobility in British society, Madrid for instance, has a very large British population, mostly Cockney low class seeking work. Even though geographically Spain and Britain are closer to each other than, say, Latin America is to Spain, the two cultures are as different as night and day. Despite all the "racism" in Spanish society, generally most latin Americans find it easier to adjust to life in Spain than the British do. Another big problem regarding British immigrants, many claim they are only there temporarily, however, finding a society where the people are generally much nicer than back home in England, a lot of British who live in Spain NEVER want to leave.

Moving back to Hondurans, largely for cultural reasons, among the many groups of Latin Americans who live in Spain, Hondurans generally have little trouble adjusting to the culture. The reason there is some resentment, even outright racism in Spain, is because Latin American immigrants are "stealing jobs" on every level of Spanish society. Like the U.S., Spain has a problem where Spaniards have certain jobs, such as cleaning floors for example, that they don't want to do. Also like the U.S., these jobs are filled in by people from Latin America. However unlike the U.S., Spain has an extremely lazy population of young people who may put off getting their college degree as late as their late 20's, new college grads as old as 30 are not uncommon in Spain. Because of this, the country suffers from a chronic shortage of Bachelor's degree educated professionals, and what ends up happening is, you have an individual, say a Venezuelan or a Chilean, make it a Columbian, who in his or her home country can't find work, even though they hold a degree in computer science. In Spain, there are 20 openings for such work, anywhere in the country, because the young people there are so lazy, an educated Latin American who of course happens to speak Spanish, can literally take their pick. Because, thus, Latin American immigrants have taken jobs at every level, there is much resentment, specially among poorer, or unemployed Spaniards. That resentment can turn into outright racism; outright physical assaults, violent assaults against people with a Latin American accent, regardless of income, are not uncommon in fact, there are parts of Madrid, and even Barcelona and Malaga where people of Latin America can't travel alone, or at night.
