Islam developed by God since start of universe creation. Refer to question below.

Islam is an Arabic word that means submission to God, the one and only one God. In this sense Islam started with start of universe creation. However Islam per Torah revelation to Moses is called Judaism; Islam per the Bible revelation to Jesus is called Christianity; and Islam per Quran revelation to Muhammad is called the same name Islam. Islam religion per God revelation of Quran to prophet Muhammad (PBUH) started with the revelation of the first verses of Quran to prophet Muhammad through the Angel Gabriel (Jibril) while the prophet was meditating in a mountain cave, called Hiraa, in Mecca (Makkah); that is currently in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This was in year 610 AD.

See related question below for more details.

Hints:

  • Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) left Mecca per God command to him when the unbelievers in Mecca plotted to assassinate him.
  • He didn't leave Mecca with his wife because she died before his Immigration. His wife that he married when he was 25 years old remained with him as the only wife until her death after 25 years . That means that his only wife died in year 620 AD when the prophet was 50 years old. The prophet immigrated in year 622 AD and he had not married again yet.
  • God is the same God of all prophets from start of mankind until prophet Muhammad, including the prophets Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad. God's name in Arabic is Allah.
  • The Angel Gabriel (pronounced in Arabic as Jibril) who informed the Virgin Mary (in Arabic Maryam) on pregnancy with Jesus is the same Angel through whom prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) received God revelation of Quran.Muslims believe in all of God's prophets, God's angels, and all of God's holy books (but in their pure form not their edited form).
  • God's message to all prophets is from the same God and is calling, primarily, to the same mission: belief in the oneness of God and worshiping Him only. see related question below on why Quran was revealed.

Historical Perspective:

When Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) in AD 610 received revelations whilst alone in a cave he knew that he would face many difficulties and opposition but he took the responsibility that was given to him and started preaching the message of Islam.

Another view

  • Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) was born around 570 CE.
  • Around the year 610 CE, Muhammad (Peace be upon Him), while in Mecca (presently in Saudi Arabia) began to receive Quran (holy book of Islam) revelations from God.
  • In 622 CE, he left Mecca with his followers (due to sufferings in Mecca and being subject to assassination plot) to a city in the north named Yathrib (later Medina), where another Muslim community had begun to grow. The date of this emigration is the beginning year for the Muslim calendar.
  • When the prophet died in 632 CE, Islam was on its way to becoming the faith of millions of followers.
  • In Islam; Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) is regarded as a prophet - his role is more like that of Moses in Judaism rather than Jesus in Christianity. He is not regarded in anyway as divine, but the best of mankind and the most dear to God. Islam is not a new religion founded by Prophet Mohamed (peace be on him).
  • Islam with the current disciplines is an extension to the religion preached by all the Prophets of God right from Adam, Noah, Abraham, David, Solomon, Jacob, Moses, Jesus (peace be on them all).
  • Prophet Mohamed (peace be on him) is the last and final Prophet of God who called for Islam according to the Quran revelation given to him by God. Islam is the completion of the message which has been given to all the different Prophets.

Foundation of Islam
For many Muslims the term "Islam" has two meanings: the Divine Religion of Submission to God's Will (often called Islam with a small "i") and the Institutionalized Belief as Found in Qur'an and Revealed by Muhammad's Prophecy (often called Islam with a capital "I").

islam with a small "i" is a concept that comes out of Islam with a capital "I" and projects the Established Religion of Islam back into the period before would have identified as Muslim. The purpose of said belief, in a functional sense, is to gird Islam in the history afforded by the Judeo-Christian prophetic lineage and ensure its authenticity. islam also affords the believer in Islam a continuity of tradition which Muhammad only continued and corrected as opposed to having the religion of Islam be an affront or disagreement with other divinely-inspired religions. Since islam is derivative of Islam, it does not actually exist prior to Islam.

Islam, as an Established Religion, was organized and directed by Muhammad, who was born in 570 C.E. at Mecca, in Saudi Arabia.According to Islam, he received revelations from God in Mecca in from the year 610-632 C.E. He was supported by several family members like his uncle Ali Ibn Talib and his first wife Khadija to pursue these prophecies. He converted other members to his nascent religion before being expelled from Mecca to Yethrib (now known as Medina) in 622 C.E. When Muhammad became the Chief Hakam or Judge/Administrator of Yethrib, he received many new revelations and began to ask members of his community to memorize these revelations (along with prior ones). These memorizers (in Arabic Hafeths) would eventually be responsible for the creation of one unified Qur'an. By Muhammad's death, he had conquered all of Arabia and converted most of Arabia to his new faith, establishing the grounds for an Islamic Caliphate, which succeeded him.

Development of Islam
The basic principles of Islam were developed by Muhammad's death, but Islamic Law was not itself well defined. There were numerous Hadiths or stories of what Muhammad had said and done. Some contradicted others or even the Qur'an and some were clearly forgeries or excerpts of other holy documents. In the 8th and 9th centuries the Hadiths where whittled down to roughly 10% of their number and this remaining 10% were believed to be accurate. This combined with the authoritative biography of Muhammad (the Sira) began to set precedent in Islamic Law. This is when Faqihs or Jurists began to create more coherent rules and strictures of Islamic Law and sought to have them enforced by the Islamic Caliphate governments or by local mosques. This was the codification of the tradition.
