The EU is the consolidation of the European Coal and Steel Community, the European Economic Community and the European Atomic Energy Community. Therefore Italy is a founding member with a date of entry as 23 July 1953.

Italy did not use the Euro until 2002. The EU in 1953 was way different from the EU in 2002. A country gives up independence when it uses another entity's currency.

1957- Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands

1973- Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom

1981- Greece

1986- Spain, Portugal

1995- Austria, Sweden and Finland

2004- Czech Rep., Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia

2007- Romania and Bulgaria

Italy joined the UN in 1995, because its entry was earlier denied as it was a loosing country in World War II.

Italy was a founding member of what was then called the European Economic Community in 1957. The others were Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
