Jews first arrived in Palestine over 3000 years ago. They were, for the most part, forcibly expelled in the first century CE and began to return in large numbers in the late 1800s to the present day. Jews may not have been the majority population in Palestine between 70 CE and 1950 CE, but there was always a Jewish presence in the land.

There was a Jewish presence in Israel ever since the days of the bible, mainly in Jerusalem, Tiberias and Sefad (Tzfat).

In the new era, Zionist Jews began returning to Israel, mainly from eastern Europe, in the 1880's, and of course, after Israel's founding in 1948.

Jews have returned to Israel in various waves at different times in history. Probably the biggest wave of return prior to the 1800s was that caused by Sabbatean Messianism, when a high percentage of Jews believed that an Ottoman Jew named Shabbetai Tzvi was the Messiah and returned to Israel as part of their understanding of prophecy. Since the 1800s, there have been various waves of Zionist Immigration, e.g. immigration related to the development of the State of Israel or to the State of Israel once established. First in the 1880s and 1890s, then in the 1920s, then from 1948-1955, then in the 1970s, and then again after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989.
