It never was, Santa was not invented unlit about 400 AD. (Saint Nicholas of Myra is the primary inspiration for the Christian figure of Sinterklaas. He was a 4th century Greek Christian bishop of Myra(now Demre) in Lycia, a province of the Byzantine Anatolia, now in Turkey).

Answer:

Santa Claus comes from a much old tradition than Jesus Christ and the Christian saints. Like the superpositioning of Christmas on the winter solstice to allow converts to maintain a winter celebration, Santa Claus was regifted from Norse and Germanic traditions.

In Norse Mythology, Odin's magical eight-legged steed Sleipnir was capable of bearing him through the air and to and from the land of the dead. Odin, each winter at Yule, would launch a great hunt with fellow gods and slain warriors.

Little children would stuff their boots full of carrots, straw and sugar for Odin's flying horse to eat and set them near the chimney at night. Odin, who like Santa is described as an old, bearded, mysterious man, would reward them for this kindness by leaving gifts or candy in place of Sleipnir's food.

The Dutch used Odin and his horse to base St. Nicholas and his horse on. They then brought the tradition to America when they colonized it.

Despite Santa Claus's partial Christian roots, he has become a secular representation of Christmas. As such, the character has sometimes been the focus of controversy over the holiday and its meanings. Some Christians dislike secular Christmas, believing that it detracts from, or even parodies, the religious celebration. Other Christians condemn the materialist focus of contemporary gift giving and see Santa Claus as the symbol of that culture.

Condemnation of Christmas was prevalent among the 17th century English Puritans and Dutch Calvinists who banned the holiday as either pagan or Roman Catholic. The American colonies established by these groups reflected this view. Tolerance for Christmas increased after the Restoration but the Puritan opposition to the holiday persisted in New England for almost two centuries. In the Dutch New Netherland colony, season celebrations focused on New Year's Day.

Following the Restoration of the monarchy and with Puritans out of power in England, the ban on Christmas was satirized in works such as Josiah King's The Examination and Tryal of Old Father Christmas; Together with his Clearing by the Jury (1686) Nissenbaum, chap. 1.

Rev. Paul Nedergaard, a clergyman in Copenhagen, Denmark, attracted controversy in 1958 when he declared Santa to be a "pagan goblin" after Santa's image was used on fund-raising materials for a Danish welfare organization Clar, 337. One prominent religious group that refuses to celebrate Santa Claus, or Christmas itself, for similar reasons is the Jehovah's Witnesses.] A number of denominations of Christians have varying concerns about Santa Claus, which range from acceptance to denouncement.

Some Christians prefer the holiday focus on the actual birth of Jesus, believing that Christmas stemmed from pagan festivals such as the Roman Saturnalia and Germanic Yule that were subsumed within ancient Christianity. An even smaller subset of Reformed Christians actually prefer the secularized version of the holiday for the same reasons, believing that to relegate Christ's birth to Christmas is wrong

Santa Claus comes to us from a long tradition, even before we celebrated Christmas, of celebrating the birthday of St Nicholas. In Northern Europe his name was shortened to Santa Claus.
