To basically rally the troops. Also to replace Grand Duke Nicholas as Supreme Commander. Big mistake for several reasons. One-he didn't have the military background. The Army and the public blamed the Tsar personally for military failures. And he was abbsent from the capitol for months/years leaving the gov't basically in the hands of the Empresss who was hated and controlled by Rasputin. Who was even more despised.
The last Tsar of Russia was Nicholas Romanov II. There are some who claim that Nicholas II was not the last Tsar but that either his brother Michael was or his son Alexei was. These are non-sense. Nicholas II abdicated the throne in March 1917 in favor of his brother Michael, however according to Russian law, the title of Tsar was not Nicholas's to give to any person he desired. It had to go to the Tsar's eldest male child, Alexei. In any event, Michael refused to accept the title and was never crowned Tsar, so he was not the last Tsar. The title was by law supposed to go to Alexei, but the abdication itself was questionable. Alexei was likewise never crowned or acted as Tsar. The last Tsar was without a doubt Nicholas II.

you didn't say which one, but the main cause was that peasants in Russia were starving because their wages were decreasing. this caused bloody Sunday (where tsar nicholas II killed hundreds of demonstraters). people were angry at this, and began to go on strikes. the tsar kept capturing and executing them until the death toll went into the thousands. after that, more and more people began to join the newly formed bolshevik government (also known as the soviets). it went from there.
