Black history really started in the Americas with slavery. I think that the American people recognized that slavery was a fully American experience and that black Americans are a part of what America is, that the thought that we should have a special month set aside to acknowledge that and to celebrate black Americans' history and contributions to the history of the United States.
When the first African slaves came to America, many came as indentured servants, and were on the same level as their white counterparts. However, as the number of white indentured servants decreased, the need for black slaves grew. Eventually, they went from indentured status to full blown, life-long slaves. After the slaves were freed, racism increased as southerners struggled to keep white supremacy alive. The Black Codes were used to take away the freedoms the Reconstruction amendments had provided black people. Those laws developed into what came to be known as Jim Crow. Segregation remained in effect until the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
There is actually no exact historical date that black racism started. In fact, racism goes all the way back to the dark ages.
Arguably, before anybody else's. The first recorded human bones have recently been shown to come out of Africa, therefore the first humans were African.
