The per centage of the population that is gay or lesbian probably has not changed significantly since Columbus -- everything we've been able to find out suggests about 6 to 10% of the population is primarily same-sex oriented.

After the Second World War, a number of gay ex-servicemen settled in places like San Francisco, New York, and Boston and formed supportive communities. In the 1950's a group of gay people organized a public protest in Washington, D.C. Shortly afterward, one of the leaders of that protest, Frank Kameny, appeared on a television interview show -- with a paper bag mask!

In the 1960's, gay and lesbian people became more visible as part of the "sexual revolution." Since then, we have been coming out, demanding to be treated equally with other US citizens.

That is probably the quickest tour of GLBT history ever written. There are a lot of books available with more details, check out "Gay History" on the web.

Why the constant increase in homosexuality and bisexuality?

As people become less bigoted, and more tolerant of homosexuality and bisexuality, homosexuals and bisexuals feel more comfortable being open about their sexual identity. Since the Gay Rights Movement in the 1970s, gays and bisexuals have become less willing to hide their sexuality and be ashamed of it. Homosexuality and bisexuality isn't increasing. Rather, more and more people are admitting to it.
