Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. born in 1499, was a Portugese explorer who was noted for his exploration of the west coast of North America. He was the first European explorer to navigate the coast of present-day California and he helped found the city of Oaxaca, Mexico. He passed away on the 3rd of January, 1543, by an infection on his arm or leg. (Nobody knows for sure which one or how he broke it.)
Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo joined his first expedition to the new world in 1502. He served under Hernando Cortez in 1519 and joined several other military expeditions before returning to Spain in 1532. He went on his final expedition in 1542, but was wounded in a skirmish with San Salvador natives and died on January 3, 1543.
