At the suggestion of Marquis de Lafayette suggested that the American and French armies unite in order to challenge Cornwallis in Yorktown, the peninsula where the York and the James river meet. After the French Navy forced the British ships out of the Chesapeake Bay and held them out as to prevent Cornwallis from being rescued or assisted by sea. Once they forced the British out of the Bay the French and the Americans bombarded Cornwallis and his troops constantly until they surrendered on October 17, 1781. After 2 days of waiting, George Washington, the French generals, and their troops gathered as Cornwallis sent his representation General Charles O'Hara, to give Washington, and the his French allies his sword in surrender.

The American Revolution was a political battle fought against Britain during which America rejected the rule of Britain's Parliament.

The war ended in 1781, with Britain removing any claims it has on the United States in 1783 with the Treaty of Paris.

The basic issues of national governance were settled with the unanimous ratification in 1788 of the Constitution of the United States.
