The compass first started in China.

It was probably used originally for feng shui and not for direction finding.

The earliest reference to the use of a compass for direction finding is about 1040 AD.

answ2. The original Chinese compass was a spoon shaped device, made in such a way as it balanced on the bowl of the spoon. And thus was free to rotate.

The metal was then magnetized. This you could do by stroking it with a magnet.

1) Go onto the internet.

2) Find a website for a Chinese manufacturer or orienteering outfitter.

3) Order a compass.

4) Have the Chinese factory workers/artisans assemble one for you.

5) Receive through mail in 3-7 business days.

Or, if you're a hands-on kind of person.

1) Go to China.

2) Take the job of one of the Chinese factory workers/artisans.

3) Receive on-the-job training.

The use of a magnetic compass as a direction finder occurred sometime before 1044, but incontestable evidence for the use of the compass as a navigational device did not appear until 1119.
