Philippine independence was declared on June 12, 1898 by Emilio Aguinaldo. This date, however, was not recognized by the United States at the time, due to the cession of the Philippine Islands from Spain to the United States by the Treaty of Paris (1898).

The Philippines was granted semi-independent status as the Commonwealth of the Philippines in 1935 through the Tydings-McDuffie Act allowing for a 10-year transitional period to full independence, thus, after WWII, the Republic of the Philippines was inaugurated on July 4, 1946.
