The Romans conquered southern England in 43. The emperor Claudius sent Aulus Plautius with four legions after an appeal from an ousted British king who was a Roman ally. After the initial campaign Claudius went to Britain with reinforcements and war elephants. He stayed there for only 16 days. This invasion was quick. The invasion of Wales was also undertaken. This took 30 years as the mountainous territory favoured resistance.

The Romans conquered northern England in 78-79 BC. The emperor Vespasian, who had participated in the first invasion and had taken over the southwest of England, sent Agricola to undertake this invasion. Agricola also pushed into Scotland. However, the Romans gave up the conquest of Scotland.
