Alaska was purchased in 1867 and Hawaii was annexed by act of Congress in 1898 without a referendum by the people of Hawaii. Asian residents were not allowed to vote and Native Hawaiians were denied the vote because they did not own property. Only a wealthy and politically connected white, American group of businessmen made the decisions for the Island Nation.

∙ 14y agoOn 12 August 1898 it became a US Territory as the result of questionable legality that resulted from the passage of the Newlands Resolution which contravened the express requirements in the US Constitution.
