Because Germany invaded France- they were given little choice in the matter.
Unless they were drafted like in WWI, they didn't have to join. If you were drafted and didn't go you were probably arrested.

In WWI the naval and economic interests of the US were at stake and this is how the US was convinced to join (in late 1917) the French and British armies fighting since 1914. In WWII France had been already defeated and Great Britain suffered an ordeal under German air strikes before the Pearl Harbor attack convinced the US to stand with their European allies.
The Germans' use of unrestricted submarine warfare against the merchant and passenger ships lead to the United States joining allies in WWI. The US had not a chance fighting the Germans alone.
The US was not attacked except at sea prior to WWI.
