The mass evacuation of Dunkirk was conducted from 26 May 1940 to 4 June 1940. Over these nine days, 338,226 French and British soldiers were taken from Dunkirk, France and the surrounding beaches by a fleet of about seven hundred vessels, including the Little Ships of Dunkirk, a mixture of merchant marine vessels, fishing boats, pleasure craft and RNLI lifeboats, whose civilian crews were called into service for the emergency.

The BEF (British Expeditionary Force) was thoroughly beaten by the advancing German Army in France in 1940. The army retreated to the coast at Dunkirk where they were embarked on boats of all sizes and ferried back to the south coast of England. Around 335000 British and French forces escaped but they had to leave most of their equipment and ammunition behind. It was probably the worst defeat that the British Army has ever suffered but Propaganda at the time, hailed it as a victory. There is no doubt that the logistics of the evacuation were superbly executed by Admiral Ramsey and have been described as 'the miracle' of Dunkirk.

338,000 Allied soldiers were rescued from the coast of France at Dunkirk to escape from an advancing German Army although they had to leave most of their equipment behind. Only 10% of that number were expected to escape.
